Rules

General tournament rules as outlined in the Midwest Classic Tournament Packet.

  • Game Length: Games will consist of three (3) 13-minute periods. Teams will switch ends between periods and have one minute before play resumes. Time will be stopped under 2 minutes if the game is within 3 goals.
  • Face-offs: Face-offs will be NCAA 2023-2024 rules
  • Checking: All checking from behind is a penalty even on loose balls. Players will be penalized two minutes for a minor hit from behind and five minutes for a major hit. Officials have been instructed to call interference off the ground very tight. Make sure your kids play the ball.
  • Board Penalties: Any hit into the boards is a two or five minute penalty. A major/flagrant hit into the boards can result in ejection from the game and the tournament. This decision is at the official’s discretion.
  • Cross Checking: Cross checking is legal and must occur below the shoulder and above the waist in a pushing manner – no pounding or hard punching. Officials and coaches are encouraged to instruct players to push with their cross, not cross check violently.
  • Air Gait/Crease Dives: Air Gait/Crease Dives are legal. If contact is made to the goalie, a two minute minor penalty will be assessed and the goal disallowed. If serious contact with the goalie is made, a five minute major penalty is assessed.
  • Shot Clocks: Once possession is clearly secured, a 30 second shot clock will begin. The shot clock resets with shooting, hitting the goalie or hitting the goal post. A shot off the back of the goalie from behind the goal line does not reset the clock.
  • Over and Back: There is no over and back unless the team with the ball has a man disadvantage. Once the ball crosses midfield, the midfield line will become “Hot” and the over and back rules will be in effect.
  • Timeouts: One timeouts are allowed per team per game for one minute.
  • Overtime: If the game is tied at the end of regulation time, a shootout will commence to determine a winner. Each team gets three opportunities to score. If both teams are still tied after the first three attempts, penalty shots will continue until a team has the lead after both teams have had an equal number of attempts to score. No player will attempt more than one shot until all members (excluding goalies) have had an attempt. The player attempting to score starts at the midline and may shoot anywhere in between the midline and the goal line. The player must continue moving forward and once the ball hits the ground, the attempt is over. Note: For the medal round, if there is a tie at the end of regulation, teams will play a 4-minute ovetime, first goal wins. If the teams are still tied after the 4-minute overtime period, a shootout will decide the winner.
  • Substitutions: These occur on the fly. There is marking on the turf that extends the length of the turf about 1.5’ off the boards. Players may enter the field of play only once the submitting player enters the marked turf area. If substituting in transition, the player leaving the field may step into this area at one end and release the oncoming player at the far end.
  • Penalties against the Goalie: If only one goalie is dressed, then another player may serve the penalty to maintain game flow. Flagrant/egregious penalties against the goalie can result in ejection even if no other goalie is suited up. Should this occur, the offending team may have to forfeit the win if a substitute goalie is not found within a reasonable amount of time. This decision is at the official’s discretion.
  • Tiebreakers: 1. Record 2. Head-to-Head 3. Goal Differential (Max +/- 8 for each game) 4. Goals Allowed 5. Goals Scored
