Border Wars: Everything you need to know

The second annual Border Wars takes place at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre from December 16-18, 2022.

The box lacrosse event is put on in partnership with the Toronto Rock, US Box Lacrosse Association and TRAC Athletics. The four-division, 22-team tournament will feature Canadian, American and Haudenosaunee teams from all over North America competing for gold, silver and bronze. A total of 55 games will be played over three action-packed days at the sport’s premier playing venue.

Whether you’re playing, coaching or cheering from the stands, here’s everything you’ll need to know for the 2022 edition of Border Wars.

Schedule, scores and standings

Go to tracathletics.com/2022-border-wars-schedule to see participating teams, schedules and standings. Game results and standings will be updated during the tournament. Follow TRAC Athletics on Instagram @TRACAthletics for updates throughout the weekend.

Standings (and seeds) will be sorted by winning %, not a point-based system.

If teams are tied in the standings, the following will be used to break ties (in order): goal differential (GD), goals against (GA), head-to-head results against tied teams, fewest penalty minutes during the entire tournament (all round-robin games), and lastly, a coin flip.

MVPs and All-Tournament Teams will be announced in the days following Border Wars. See last year’s most valuable players and All-Tournament Teams.

Tournament rules

Border Wars will be officiated using the National Lacrosse League Official Rules, with a few modifications. Rule reminders and modifications include:

Absolutely no fighting is permitted. Players will be ejected from the game and suspended for the remainder of the tournament if they engage in what the on-floor official has deemed to be a fight.
• Three 15-minute periods, running clock unless the score is within two with under two minutes to play in the final period.
• All divisions will be using 4×4 minor box nets.
• Ten seconds to clear half (not eight).
• Over-and-back rule will be enforced.
• Diving & dunking is permitted.
• No wooden sticks allowed for players or goalies.
• For all games (round robin & semifinals/medal), if the score is tied after regulation time, a three-player shootout will determine the winner (no ties), additional single rounds to determine a winner if still tied after three shooters.

Dressing room assignments

Dressing room assignments for teams will be posted on the monitors just outside of the doors of both the blue & red pads. Rooms should be available 30 minutes prior to game times. Dressing rooms are not a team’s room for the entire tournament, so please bring all your belongings with you, including equipment, after each game. A new room will be assigned before every game.

Trainers for injured players

If you should sustain an injury during a game, a trainer will be alerted and address the injury on the floor. Trainers will be stationed in the hallway that connects the two pads if you require any further assistance for injuries.
